Repatriation
Bringing your loved ones home
At Lonergan & Ravens , we understand the significance of honouring cultural traditions and ensuring that your loved ones are laid to rest in their country of birth. Our expertise lies in repatriation, the process of returning your loved one to their home country for burial or cremation. Whether your loved one was an immigrant who lived in Australia for many years or a backpacker or guest worker who tragically passed away, we have extensive experience in handling repatriations worldwide.
Embalming and travel
Ensuring dignity and care
Repatriation involves meticulous care and attention to detail. The deceased is embalmed, and their remains are placed in hermetically sealed containers, which are then securely packaged inside coffins. These coffins, along with the necessary documentation, are then shipped by air on specialised packing crates. Depending on the requirements of the receiving country, we use polyurethane or zinc linings to ensure the utmost preservation and protection during transport.
Complex legal requirements made simple
The legal process for repatriation can be complex and time-consuming. It involves obtaining a range of documents and certifications from various government departments and authorities. These include certified death certificates, embalming certificates, permissions from health departments, freedom from infectious diseases certification, postiles from the Australian Federal Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, approvals from embassies (which may require translations and inspections), permissions from the receiving country's health department, authorizations from airlines, and approvals from intermediate shipping ports for multi-leg journeys.
Navigating this intricate web of documentation, certifications, and approvals requires expertise and knowledge. At Lonergan & Raven, we serve as trusted agents for many smaller or rural funeral directors who may lack the resources and experience for this specialised task. Our team is well-versed in the intricacies of the repatriation process, ensuring that all necessary paperwork is meticulously prepared and submitted.
Experience and expertise
Over the years, we have handled hundreds of repatriations to destinations worldwide. From relatively straightforward cases involving long-term residents to complex situations requiring multiple connections and diplomatic arrangements, we have the knowledge and resources to facilitate repatriation with the utmost care and professionalism.
The time required for a repatriation varies depending on the specific circumstances involved. We strive to expedite the process while ensuring that all necessary protocols and legal requirements are met.
